Coach Chuzie is in his 13th season as the Cathedral Prep/Villa Maria varsity head coach and 21st season overall with the varsity program. Villa has played in seven (7) state title games, winning three (3) during Doug's 19-year coaching tenure. Villa was the 2022-2023 Region 6 champion and District 10 5A champion, finishing the season with a 23-2 record and ranked #3 in the state. His combined head coaching varsity record at Prep/Villa is 277-46. Prior to becoming the varsity head coach, Doug was the varsity assistant at Villa for eight seasons and junior varsity head coach for six years. His record at the JV level was 122-6.
Doug Chuzie was named head coach of the Villa Maria Academy varsity basketball team in April 2011. This was after he served as interim head coach, leading the Victors to an 8-0 record in the playoffs in the 2010-11 season, including a state championship win in the PIAA Class AA championship game.
Coach Chuzie has been a part of the Villa and Prep varsity staff for 20 seasons, starting in the 2003-04 season. The VMA varsity record during this time is 472-80. The team has won 17 consecutive region championships, 15 total district championships, and played in seven state championship games. They won three consecutive state titles from 2009 to 2011 and played in back-to-back state championship games in the '15-'16 and '16-'17 seasons, and again in the '20-'21 season. The team also went to the state final four in 2012 and 2022. During his 20 seasons with the varsity team, the women's basketball team has been ranked in the top 10 in the state for 20 consecutive years, and the program has had 46 players advance to play at the collegiate level.
Coach Chuzie will be entering his 27th year of coaching high school basketball and 21st season at Villa/Prep. Prior to coming to Villa, Coach Chuzie was a boys varsity assistant (six years) and head coach at the 8th (two years) and 9th (four years) grade levels at Girard High School. Doug also directs the Cathedral Prep girls basketball camps and clinics and is co-director of the Erie Irish AAU Basketball Club, as well as head coach of the 17U Nike/USJN Blue Star national team.
Doug is a 1996 graduate of Bucknell University and a 1992 graduate of Girard High School. He is married to Nicolle (DiRaimo) Chuzie '06VMA. Doug and Nicolle have one child, Valentino Chuzie (Cathedral Prep Class of 2038).
